Priestly Ordination

On Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10 AM, His Grace Francis Leo, Archbishop of Toronto, will ordain our transitional deacon, Rev. Mr. Carlos Torres Marquez, along with six other transitional deacons, with the Sacrament of Holy Orders as they become priests to the Archdiocese of Toronto. This wonderful event will take place at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica and the faithful are all encouraged to join us via the cathedral’s livestream

Our future Fr. Carlos Torres will celebrate his First Holy Mass, here at St. John's, on Sunday, May 14, at 10 AM, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall, hosted by the Catholic Women's League and the Knights of Columbus. All are welcome.

If you cannot joins us in person, you can watch live by following the this link: https://cdn.boltwave.com/st_john_chrysostom__newmarket_on_ca__cdn_stream.html

For those who partipate in the First Holy Mass, there is the possibility to gain a plenary indulgence.

How to obtain the First Mass Indulgence:

To obtain the plenary indulgence, first you must have the intention to gain it. Then you must participate in the newly ordained Priest’s First Mass and receive the Holy Eucharist. In addition, you must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), make a profession of faith (recite either the Apostles' or the Nicene Creed), and pray for the Holy Father and for his intentions (an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be are recommended).  It is also required that all attachment to sin, even venial sin. be absent.

Confession and the recitation of the Creed may be fulfilled several days before or after.  It is, however, fitting that Communion be received and the prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff be said on the same day the work is performed.

The indulgence may be applied for yourself or for the soul of a dearly departed, but not both. For more information on indulgences, please read, read the Catechism of the Church, paragraphs ## 1471-1479
